“Most people don’t know about the needs of the Sheriffs’ Boys Ranch,” said Kent Stocker, of Retro Cycle Works, which is located on U. S. Highway 98 in Fairhope. “We adopted the group home several years ago and were able to get a lot of badly needed supplies for them.”
The on-going list of needs include personal items such as socks, under garments and personal hygiene supplies; household needs such as cleaning supplies, kitchen items, and non-perishable food.
“Actually, we need anything you would buy for your own home and family,” said Jim Harmon, director of the Baldwin County Sheriffs’ Boys Ranch. “And, just like your own family, we need these items on a regular basis.”
The Baldwin County Sheriffs’ Boys Ranch is a part of the Alabama Sheriffs’ Youth Ranches, which is a charitable, nonprofit corporation, sponsored by the Alabama Sheriffs’ Association and managed by a board of trustees. There are currently four ranches located throughout Alabama that serves either boys or girls. The Baldwin County Sheriffs’ Boys Ranch is located on County Road 32 in Summerdale. The program is funded almost entirely by private donations from concerned individuals, churches, civic clubs, corporations and foundations.
Life on the ranch today centers around the premise of which the program was founded more than 30-years ago. Children live in a family setting with house parents. Hard work, responsibilities, manners and loving kindness are used to help children grow strong in body, mind and spirit. Residents of the home are ages six to 18 and are some of Alabama’s needy, abandoned, neglected or abused, school-age children.
